Revolutionary Solution For Bladder Issues
UrAssist is a personal urine collection and containment system designed for men and women with physical conditions that make it challenging to get to the bathroom to urinate.
How one man turned his pain into a revolutionary solution that improves the lives of people with mobility challenges and bladder issues
Following two troubling experiences while hospitalized, Edgar Otto, a successful inventor and business man set out on a mission to find a solution that would later revolutionize the urological industry. The first was an event which led to his being catheterized. This led to a urinary tract infection that became a life-threatening staph infection taking eight months to recover from. The second incident was when he was hospitalized for the removal of his gallbladder. He was unable to get out of bed and had to use a urinal which back-splashed onto his body and the bed. Each time someone came to visit, he was embarrassed about the noticeable urine odor coming from the urine bottle that hung off of the side of his bed. Never having been faced with such painful and humbling experiences, he wondered how many people suffer every day because they have difficulty managing one of the most common bodily functions: urination.
Theres got to be a better way, he thought. Out of his discomfort, Mr. Otto developed UrAssist. As he began to formulate his idea of a different kind of urine collection solution, he realized just how many people would benefit. Not only would hospitals be able to enhance their patients experience, people who are ill or elderly at home would also benefit from a urological product that doesnt compromise a persons well-being and dignity as does the use of a catheter or adult diaper. He decided to add features to make UrAssist portable so that people in wheelchairs could adapt UrAssist to their lives, whether they are in bed or in a wheelchair.
Four years and 16 prototypes later, UrAssist is now improving the quality of life for people who are elderly, wheelchair-bound, recovering from short-term conditions that limit mobility, and coping with long-term conditions such as urinary incontinence, MS and other illnesses.
